What Is Web Hosting and Why Does Your Business Need It?

You've registered your domain name. You've got your logo ready. Someone has designed a beautiful website for your shop or NGO.

Then they ask: where do you want to host it?

If you're not sure what hosting actually is, you're not alone. Most business owners don't need to understand the technical side. But knowing the basics helps you make better choices and avoid problems down the line.

What Hosting Actually Means

Think of your domain name as your business address. Hosting is the building at that address.

When someone types your website address into their browser, their computer asks the internet: where is this site? The answer points to a server (a powerful computer that runs all day, every day) where your website files are stored. That server sends your pages, images and content back to the visitor's screen.

That server space, the storage, the bandwidth to send your pages out, and the software that makes it all work? That's hosting.

What You Get With a Hosting Plan

A good hosting plan gives you more than just storage space. Here's what's typically included:

  • Disk space for your website files, images, videos and databases.
  • Bandwidth so visitors can load your pages quickly.
  • Email accounts using your domain name (like [email protected]).
  • Databases if your site uses WordPress, WooCommerce or another content management system.
  • Security features like SSL certificates so your site shows as secure.
  • Technical support when something goes wrong.

Every hosting plan we offer includes unlimited domains, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email accounts and unlimited databases. The main difference between plans is disk space. Prices are subject to change without notice.

How Much Space Do You Actually Need?

A simple brochure site with five pages, a contact form and a few photos? You'll be fine with 1GB. Standard hosting (1GB disk space) costs MWK 80,000 per year.

A WordPress site with a blog, gallery and regular updates? Professional hosting (5GB disk space) at MWK 120,000 per year gives you room to grow.

Running an online shop with hundreds of product images, or a media-heavy site? Premium hosting (10GB disk space) is MWK 240,000 per year.

For larger projects, we also offer Unlimited hosting (50GB, fair use) at MWK 530,000 per year. Fair usage policy applies. If you need something custom, ask for a quote.

Why Cheap Hosting Can Cost You More

Hosting is one area where going too cheap often backfires.

Slow servers mean visitors wait. Many leave before your page even loads. Downtime (when the server is offline) means lost customers and lost sales. Poor support means you're stuck when something breaks.

If your website is how customers find you, book your services or buy your products, reliable hosting isn't optional. It's as essential as having the lights on in your physical shop.

Local or International Hosting?

Some businesses ask whether they should host in Malawi or abroad.

International hosting is often faster for a global audience. Local hosting can be better if most of your customers are in Malawi and you want to support local infrastructure. Either option works. What matters most is a reputable provider with solid uptime, good speed and responsive support.

What Happens When Hosting Expires?

Like domain names, hosting plans have expiry dates.

If your hosting lapses, your website goes offline. Your email stops working. Visitors see an error. The longer it stays down, the more you lose (customers, trust, search ranking).

Rules differ by provider. The safest approach? Renew before your expiry date. Set a reminder a month early. Treat it like paying rent.

Getting Started

If you're launching a new site or moving an existing one, think about what you actually need. How big is your site now? How much will it grow in the next year?

Choose a plan that gives you breathing room without paying for space you'll never use. You can always upgrade later if your needs change.

And if you're not sure which plan fits your project, just ask. We'll walk you through the options and help you pick something that makes sense for your business and your budget.
