Do You Need a Malawi .mw Domain or Is a .com Enough?

You are registering your business website for the first time. The domain registrar offers you a .com domain and a .mw domain. One costs less, the other sounds more local. Which do you actually need?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from Malawian shop owners, NGOs and startups. The answer is not always obvious, so let us look at what each option really means for your business.

What the Domain Extension Actually Does

Your domain name is your address on the internet. The bit after the dot (like .com or .mw) is called the extension or top-level domain.

A .com is a global extension. Anyone, anywhere can register one. It is the most recognised extension in the world and customers expect to see it.

A .mw is Malawi's country code extension. Only people or organisations with a local presence in Malawi can register a .mw domain. It is managed by SDNP, the Sustainable Development Networking Programme.

Both work exactly the same technically. Your website, email and everything else function identically on either extension.

The Real Cost Difference

Here is where things get concrete. A .com or .org domain costs less per year.

A .mw domain costs more for two years (a two-year registration is required when you first register a .mw domain). You also pay a one-time activation fee.

So your first .mw registration costs MWK a bit more upfront for two years. Your first .com costs less for one year.

That is a significant difference for a small business. You need to know what you are getting for the extra money.

Does a .mw Domain Help With Google Rankings?

This is the question that matters most to businesses trying to appear in local search results.

Google has said that country code domains like .mw can serve as a geographic signal. If someone in Malawi searches for a service, a .mw site might get a small boost in local results.

But the boost is small. Google cares far more about your actual content, your location information, your Google Business Profile and whether local customers link to you and mention you online.

A well-optimised .com with clear Malawian contact details, local content and good reviews will outrank a poorly maintained .mw site every time.

What Malawian Customers Actually Think

Some businesses worry that a .com looks foreign or less trustworthy to local customers.

In practice, most Malawian internet users recognise and trust .com domains because they see them everywhere. They search on Google, shop on international sites and use social media platforms, all of which use .com or other global extensions.

What builds trust is not the domain extension. It is your content, your contact details, your physical address, your phone number and whether customers can verify you are a real local business.

A .mw can add a touch of local identity. It shows you are serious about serving Malawian customers. But it is a small signal compared to everything else on your site.

When a .mw Makes Sense

A .mw domain is worth considering if you are a well-established organisation, if your brand is built around being distinctly Malawian, or if you want to block competitors from registering your name under .mw.

Government bodies, national NGOs, schools and larger businesses often choose .mw for credibility and local identity.

If you are a startup, a small shop or a service business on a tight budget, a .com gives you everything you need at a lower cost. You can always add a .mw later if your business grows.

Can You Use Both?

Yes. Many businesses register both and point them to the same website. This protects your brand and gives customers flexibility.

If you do this, set one as your main domain and redirect the other to it. Do not run identical content on two separate domains or Google may penalise you for duplication.

Our Practical Recommendation

Start with a .com unless you have a strong reason to do otherwise. It costs less, it is recognised everywhere and it works perfectly well for local search if your site is properly optimised.

Spend the money you save on better hosting, on content, on getting your Google Business Profile right or on a professional website design.

If your business grows and the .mw becomes worth the investment, you can add it later and redirect it to your existing site.
